A Mind Like Christ

It sure would be cool to be able to read the minds of other people. Then again maybe I do not really want to know what others are thinking. I sure am glad other people cannot read my mind for it is not alway as beautiful as I wish it was. Like all people I have to work on my thinking. For there are many things that cross my mind that are far from Godly, far from Holy and far from the mind of Christ. Our minds are our biggest battlefield. Similarly as someone who has suffered from many wounds I have become very aware of the fact that a broken bone heals very quickly and easily without long term consequences but things that affect the mind… They are not so easily healed or fixed.

It sure would be nice to have a mind like Christ where all my thoughts were of things related to God, his kingdom and the fathers ways. So today I would like to ponder how we as Christians work on this area. How do we work to have a mind more like Christ? I do not know that I have all the answers to this and this is something I am currently working on myself. I am working with God to make my mind more like Christ’s.

The first thing I do is ask for God to work in my mind to give me a mind like Christ. Ultimately this is something God has to do in us through the Holy Spirit. When I am spending time in prayer on this topic I often become more aware of my thinking. For instance I may be having a conversation with another person and a thought crosses my mind or I may even make a comment and there is something inside me that says, “wait a second, that was not very Christ like.” I thus have to take captive that thought. I have to realize that the thought was not what it should be thus I ask for God’s forgiveness and replace the thought with what I should be thinking. How do I know what I should be thinking? Well the Bible has a lot to say about what we should be thinking.

Similarly counseling can be helpful especially when you are just getting started. Meeting with fellow Christians that are also working on these areas is helpful. But at the end of the day it is only God that can work in us to give us more a mind like Christ. That being said if you go to him humbly asking he will not disappoint.

“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.” 2 Corinthians 10:3-6
