“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.” 1 John 1:5-10
Everyone in existence is being shaped by something. We are often shaped by what surrounds us. Particularly the people in our lives. It does not matter who you are, how sure you are of yourself or how tight minded. We are all shaped by our environment. It is part of being human. This is one reason why Christian fellowship is so essential. For fellowship with other believers shapes us. It brings life, light and healing. It shows us our sin and gives us the ability to turn from the sin.
Fellowship with other believers is incredibly important to the Christian Faith. For the Christian Faith has an individual component but overall is meant to be in community. As someone not raised in the traditional church I am incredibly thankful that God managed to provide me fellowship with other believers through non-traditional means. It is so hard to live in situations of darkness. When we are surrounded by non believers it is challenging, it wears on you and causes all kinds of problems. In a way it’s like living on a battlefield. But it is through the fellowship of believers that we get to taste and see the light of Jesus. Fellowship can be like a beacon of Hope. It can be a place of rest. It can be a place of protection. It can be a place of cleansing.
When we lose fellowship with believers we lose the light of Jesus. For Jesus’s light lives through us his followers. Do you have Christian fellowship in your life? If not you may be living in darkness without even realizing it. Why not try making a change and see what happens.
