The Walking Dead

Many years ago I tried to watch the show “The Walking Dead.” There were so many people raving about the show so I thought I would give it a try. I have never been able to tolerate scary movies or thrillers but typically I am able to tolerate zombies and such. Well I was very mistaken. I think I watched 2 episodes and it gave me nightmares for a week. It messed me up. So no more Walking Dead for me. I am a complete pansy when it comes to entertainment. Maybe this is why I tend to watch a lot of kids shows. Laugh if you want but they don’t give me nightmares. Thankfully in today’s world there an no zombies, well with the exception of Halloween perhaps. But I would argue we do have a lot of walking dead.

What makes us alive? Christ is the only source of life. Repentance of our sin and belief in Jesus is the only way we can receive life. Furthermore when we are baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit it is like a fountain of life coming to dwell within us. You can be a great person. You can be kind. You can be loving. You can do wonderful works in this world. But without Jesus you are still the walking dead. For Jesus is the only source of life. But similarly those of us who receive the gift of life can easily fall asleep. We are alive in Christ but we are like sleeping beauty for we are not walking with Christ, abiding in him and work for his kingdom.

We have a lot of walking dead and sleeping beauties in this world. Are you the walking dead, a sleeping beauty or are you alive in Christ?

“To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God.Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you. Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” Revelations 3:1-6
